Dasher's entered the Paws Giving Independence program during Christmas time, which is how he got his name. And just like Santa's reindeer, Dasher is getting ready to help his people!
Dasher was rescued in Arkansas and brought to Illinois at 8 weeks of age. Now Dasher is 9 months old and he is hard at work learning how to help people.
Hannah (Dasher's trainer) is a college student at Illinois State University and the President of Indy-pendence Service Dogs, a student organization on campus. Hannah has to train Dasher all while going to college. She says, "There is so much more to it than, 'that's so cool you get to bring a dog to class with you!' It actually takes upwards of 20-30 minutes longer to walk to class, so we can focus on proper walking, ignoring distractions, looking at crosswalks, taking the stairs one step at a time (literally), and working the handicap and elevator buttons. It is a constant training environment. Some things you would never notice, like a rogue plastic bag, or a squirrel become a distraction to a service puppy in training." Although the work is hard and Hannah knows that she will one day have to give Dasher to someone in need of a service dog, she says it's worth it to have this unforgettable experience.
Dog Anthology strives to capture that bond that we feel when we look at our dogs and to help people cherish the human animal bond that we are so lucky to experience. To learn more about a photography session with Dog Anthology click on the button below.
